Postmortem

What went right:

  • We were able to combine the two initial ideas, which are a click-and-drag game and an ordering game, together into one game which is then combined with the theme of evolution.
  • The communication between group members went really well and we were able to divide the workload evenly and coordinate with each other.
  • Coding for the win and lose conditions went smoothly as well. We were able to create several scenes which lead the game from the start to finish without any major problem.

What went wrong:

  • The initial sprites we had for the different stages of the game were too similiar that they were difficult to identify, which affected the players during the playtest.
  • In addition, in the beta version, there was no way for the player to know what the actual order the images should be in unless they win once in the game. This also affected the players aduring the playtest and made the game very difficult to play because the players don't have the vision of their goals.
  • The pictures can be drag outside the screen.

What we learned:

  • From making this project, we learned how to do fast brainstorming and immediate prototyping since this is only a 1-week long project. It was important to decide on ideas fast so that we could test it out and change what parts of the ideas that aren't working.
  • In addition, we also learned how to prioritize the different parts of the design with the short 1-week limit. Our top priority was making the gameplay as straightforward as possible bause the game is short. Also, we decided to have easy replays and made the game a but difficult at first so that the players can learn more with each replays. The art and aesthetic parts of the game then came in as the later priority.

Next Steps:

  • One of the next steps could be to add more levels to the game under the theme of evolution. It could be the same ordering game but with varying difficulty with other animals. It could also become one of the mini games under a bigger game which contain many mini games under the theme of evolution.
  • To address the problem that the pictures can be dragged outside the screen, we can add a constraint around the border which will prevent the problem from happening.
  • We can also add more animations in order to have more feedbacks within the game.
